GAZA LOCAL ISSUES
2009 - 2018

After Gaza split from the West bank government in 2009 it issued its own unauthorised 'local' stamps.
When the Gaza & West Bank governments re-unified in 2014 Gaza local issues were allowed to be used on all internal Palestinian Authority mail.

Some notes about Gaza issues

Gaza items, especially FDC's, are not always of the highest quality. A wrinkled MS on an FDC is quite common...unfortunately. .

Because Stanley Gibbons list only the first stamps issued in Gaza under Palestinian Authority and Michel do not list them at all
we have devised our own reference numbers. These are shown in red beside the price of each item.

Battle of Shale Stones Issue
Although the FDC's are dated 12/12/2012 the stamps and miniature sheet were not released until June 2013
Legend has it that in the year of the birth of Mohammed King Abraha, the Christian King of Ethiopia, attacked Mecca with his powerful army which was known as the Army of the Elephants. The inhabitants of Mecca fled to the mountains because they were unable to fight such a strong enemy.
Chapter [Sura] 105 of the Koran is entitled 'The Elephant' and reads: 'In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. Have you not considered how Allah dealt with the Army of the Elephant? Did he not foil their stratagem and send against them flocks of birds which pelted them with clay-stones, so that they became like plants cropped by cattle?'
There are various translations into English of the above text but all are basically the same and all agree that small birds literally bombed the Elephant Army with small stones and wiped it out.
On November 14th 2012 the Israelis assassinated Ahmed Jabari, a prominent Hamas member, in a Gaza street. Hamas responded by launching hundreds of rockets from Gaza into Israel and called this bombardment 'The Battle of the Shale Stones' because the rockets falling on Israel created the same fear among the Israelis as the fear created in the Elephant Army when they were attacked from the air by the birds.
A bird and a picture of Ahmed Jabir are included in the design of the stamps and miniature sheet.
Because shale is basically clay perhaps the stamp designers meant to name the stamps as The Battle of the Clay Stones but chose the wrong word when translating from Arabic into English?
Three new issues were released during the first week of January2013 but the intended release dates were 17 June 2012 for the 'Burak Revolution Martyrs' and 'Isra and Maraj Journey' miniature sheets, and 1 September 2012 for the 'Old Palestinian Currency' stamps and miniature sheet.

The Maghrebi Gate is the only entrance to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound which can be used by non Muslims. The Mahgrebi Gate was given its name by Salah al-Din [better known in the West as Saladin] as a token to one of his soldiers who originated in North Africa; a region which is called the Mahgreb.
The dates on the FDC's bear no resemblance to the real date of issue.

2010
The four sets of stamps shown below along with their respective miniature sheets and first day covers were planned early in 2010 but for various reasons were not issued until the 6th December. They were originally to be issued as postage stamps but due to Israeli objections to the theme of the stamps they were distributed to various government departments in Gaza to be used as revenue stamps. The high face values, especially the miniature sheets, would have made them unaffordable to the average citizen anyway, and they have now an additional 14% VAT added to their face values thus making them even more expensive.
The stamps are issued in sheetlets of 10 stamps. Total numbers issued are 10,000 of each set [1,000 sheets] and 5,000 miniature sheets of each set.
